Burn Calories

One calorie is the amount of energy (heat) required to raise one cubic centimeter of water by one degree centigrade. The calorie content of food is measured by burning it in the calorimeter.

Comments:

Actually the calorie described (gram calorie) and food calories (kilogram calories) are very different:

Gram calorie
The gram calorie or calorie, is the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of ONE GRAM of water by 1 °C. The gram calorie was once commonly used in chemistry and physics but has been replaced by the Joule.

Kilogram calorie
The kilogram calorie or food calorie, is the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of ONE KILOGRAM of water by one degree Celsius.
